The Foyle is a fast flowing river that has mapped out for itself a unique and fascinating history. The current can reach up to 5 knots at the full run of the tide.

It was from a point of Lough Foyle at St Columb’s Park that the famous saint left the banks of the Foyle to establish Christianity in Scotland and the north of England.

The navigable part of the river begins from the new peace bridge and continues downstream, past Lisahally commercial docks, Culmore Point out to Lough Foyle, Greencastle and the North Atlantic.

With such a beautiful backdrop of the river, lough and mountains of Inishowen, Derry is a city like no other. Not only is the city idyllically situated, it was also militarily and economically strategic in its placement as a stepping stone to the North Atlantic. Londonderry was a key emmigration port and was instrumental to the Allied forces during the Second World War.
